From Our PTA President
Updated: Jul 8, 2018
Greetings Sierra Families!
I’m writing this on a day when two fairly significant events are happening in our Sierra community. One of those is our Sierra Carnival. Let me tell you something. I’ve been volunteering for as long as I can remember. For as long as I can remember the leaders of the organizations I volunteer for have been thanking me for the hour of my time that I can give here and there - and until recently I didn’t really understand why, because I was giving what I could, but what difference could my hour possibly make to the overall picture?
Now that I have spend a year managing an organization that depends entirely on volunteers, I get it. Every single tiny task, every half hour shift, everyone who helps to put away chairs - you all make a difference. I am heartened this year that our PTA has seen so many new faces step up to fill positions small and large.
I want to invite all of our volunteers to our volunteer appreciation dinner on May 15 so that we can celebrate your contributions! Traditionally we hold our volunteer dinner at our final PTA meeting of the year, which will be May 10 - however, that night is Sierra’s community open house as well as this year’s Reflections celebration, and we didn’t want the volunteer dinner to be overshadowed, or the superintendent to come and eat all your food. I sincerely hope to see you all there, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do for Sierra.
The second - and frankly, the far more significant - thing happening today is that our kids have the day off so that our teachers can advocate for better education funding. The day off was an inconvenience for many of us, but I’m hoping we’re all able to see the larger picture here. Our teachers aren’t taking a personal day just for themselves. They are there on behalf of our kids as well. One of my favorite bloggers has a favorite saying - “Love shows up.” Our teachers are showing up for our kids today as they do every day, because if our broken public education funding system can be fixed EVERYONE will benefit. I want all of our Sierra teachers to know I’m proud of them. They have my personal support and the support of PTAs across our state and nation.
As always, Sierra, thank you so much for all of your support! I’ll see you all at the Carnival tonight!
